Can I legally build an ADU?

Short answer: almost certainly, yes. California has spent the last decade systematically removing barriers to backyard housing — and Los Angeles has followed suit. Here's the law as it stands today, in plain English.

The law now allows you to build on your property.

In 2016, the California Legislature passed a series of laws that eliminated all the red tape surrounding Accessory Housing Units (ADUs) in backyards.

Three years later, in 2019, Assembly Bill 68 was passed which completely removed restrictions for ADU construction, making it even easier for a homeowner to build on multi-family buildings.

Don't put off building your ADU any longer. The law now allows you to build on your property, and as experts, we can help from start to finish.

The original ADU bill

California eliminated most of the red tape around backyard ADUs. Cities could no longer require unreasonable setbacks or parking minimums.

2019AB 68 / Active Law

The big one

Most remaining restrictions removed. Homeowners can now build an ADU + JADU on a single-family lot, often without changing zoning. Multi-family ADUs explicitly allowed.

Streamlined LA permits

Los Angeles Building & Safety expanded its pre-approved ADU plan program. Faster review, fewer revisions, lower fees for qualifying designs.
